Short
tailed
merinos arrive!

|
|
|
Large numbers of
merino ram lambs (and ewe lambs) with naturally short tails have been bred at Parkdale Poll Merino Stud, Dubbo, New South Wales.
The lambs are part of the SRS® stud breeding program. Selection for this short tail trait has been in place for 5 years.

The short tailed lambs (third and fourth from the left) have excellent muscular control which allows the tail to be elevated clear of the urine stream. The short tails are very different to the long tails seen in the other lambs in the photo.
The merino lambs with their wrinkle-free bodies do not need to be mulesed and now do not need to be tail docked.
